The earthquake occurred five weeks to the day before the Christchurch native elections.
On 7 September, John Key appointed Cabinet Minister, Chief of the House and MP for the Christchurch electorate of Ilam Gerry Brownlee because the Minister
for Earthquake Recovery to oversee the response to the earthquake.
Heritage New Zealand board member Anna Crighton mentioned the earthquake
had been "unbelievably destructive." The historic homesteads of Hororata and Homebush
inland from Christchurch have been each extensively damaged,
as have been Ohinetahi homestead and Godley Home on Banks
Peninsula. Heritage specialists urged constructing owners not to hastily
demolish their buildings. South Island distribution centres in Christchurch, had to ship essential merchandise to their
South Island shops from the North Island,
whereas Foodstuffs (house owners of recent World and Pak'n Save) needed to ship to all their South
Island stores from their Dunedin distribution centre.
In Oamaru, 225 kilometres southwest of Christchurch, the
earthquake brought on part of a chimney on the St
Kevin's College principal's residence to fall by way of the home, and caused
the clock atop the Waitaki District Council constructing to stop at 4:36 am.
